Clear communication is the key for quality recycling
As we’re part of the DS Smith Group – a leading supplier of sustainable packaging solutions – the paper and card we collect from our customers goes back into our manufacturing processes. Not only does this mean we offer a real closed loop recycling solution, but also that we have a genuine interest in the quality of the materials we collect.
We have always maintained that quality in recycling is best achieved by collecting certain materials separately. For us paper and card should be collected separately from plastic, glass, food or paper. This helps to avoid contamination – for example, if glass ended up in a bundle of papers, it could damage our recycling machinery.
But to ensure that collections are high quality, it’s important to make sure that everyone knows how and where to recycle their material.
Across the industry, there have been calls for clearer communication and more consistency in the way that recycling is collected from homes and businesses.
We welcomed WRAP’s Greater Consistency Framework and its focus on how clean, high-quality paper and card for recycling can benefit local authorities and recyclers alike.
