Netting sustainable supply cycle benefits through packaging
Young’s Seafood have been supplying fish for more than 200 years so it’s not surprising that their initial focus is on protecting the source – fish and the sea. They are passionate about reducing environmental impact in every part of their process, and working with DS Smith their strategic packaging partner, they’ve netted sustainable supply cycle benefit through packaging.
Challenge
Reduce the environmental impact while improving logistics and distribution efficiency.
Our Approach
DS Smith applied the expertise of its people and applied its PackRight approach to review each touch point of the supply chain; one key area assessed was the substrate specified for its customers’ packs. The traditional b-flute corrugated has now been replaced by DS Smith’s R-Flute® product, which offers a superior print surface, enhanced appearance, machine line efficiencies and logistics savings, particularly in the handling, storage and movement of inbound packaging.
Results
The reduced calliper pack hasn’t compromised strength or performance, and has resulted in:
- more packs per inbound delivery
- up to 26% reduction in pallet movements
- 6% increase in vehicle load utilisation; contribution to a 10.5% reduction in transport related carbon emissions per unit
- significant efficiencies in warehousing and transport
- the use of FSC® certified materials
R-Flute® has been intensively developed to provide better packaging in a wide range of FMCG and Retail Ready Packaging applications, and has led to significant reductions in energy, carbon and transport fuel for Young’s Seafood.
DS Smith where delighted recently to receive the Young’s Seafood Supplier of the Year Award 2015.
