DS Smith triple-wins in ScanStar design competition
The success of our innovative and sustainable packaging designs has once again been internationally recognized – three times! Our design teams from Finland, Sweden and Denmark received the well-deserved recognition for their award-wining packaging designs.
ScanStar is a Nordic packaging competition driven by enthusiasm for creating usable, sustainable, and appealing packaging. Every packaging that is designed, manufactured, or used in Nordics qualifies to take part in the competition. Embracing an innovative and future-shaping way of thinking has enabled our Nordic design teams to submit three unique and sustainable packaging solutions to exceed customer expectations.
The Finnish packaging entry - A design chair (Artek) packaging
Kicking it off with Finland, the packaging entry has been designed by Jyrki Valkama who already has been awarded in the competition for the third time since 2019. Together with the whole team, they have brought success to Finland for the sixth time in a row.
The starting point for this year’s design was to find a simple packaging for Artek's iconic stool that could be made from just one material. The Carry Away packaging is made entirely of corrugated cardboard and the legs of the chair are now protected by a corrugated cardboard structure. The pack has a handy handle, making it easy to carry.
The designed packaging works for both 3 and 4 legged stools, as well as a children's stool. This makes storage more efficient by eliminating the need for multiple sizes of blanks. Unlike the previous packaging solution, this solution eliminates the need to wrap the legs of the product in plastic. For the consumer, recycling is easier as there is no need to sort or separate materials.
The packaging respects the chair design well and communicates with its quality and simplicity. It is functional, easy to use and works with several chair sizes. The designer has made a packaging that is in harmony with its content and provides good protection.
The Swedish packaging entry – Packaging for bobbins
Moving on to Sweden, the winning packaging entry “Bobbin Pack” turned multiple customer challenges into opportunities. From being protective to being fast and easy to pack, this multi-facetted solution is serving a wide range of various product sizes without changing its own.
The box itself is die-cutted in one piece and separated by the customer. The flat piece of corrugated cardboard can be transformed into star- shaped center pin in a couple of seconds. Additionally, it is made from one material which makes it easy to recycle into new material. The cut outs in the side of the product make it possible to adjust the height of the lid to the different products.
The simple carton packaging keeps product well in place offering good protection. The clever insert that goes on top of the bobbin is pushed down and locks to the inside of the box to fixate bobbins in different widths to move vertically.
The Danish packaging entry – Eliza gift basket for confectionary and wine products
The Danish winning solution is a sturdy cardboard basket for gift items and other purposes. Exceeding the customers’ expectations, this design represents are more sustainable solution by replacing the wooden packaging used in the past. It’s distinctive features make it easy to transport for logistics and creates an economical saving for the customer thanks to its corrugated material.
The jury appreciated the beautiful appearance of the surface of the packaging as an "open-flute" solution where the waves are visible to the consumer. The packaging is sturdy and designed to be used many times over.
The basket made of open flute corrugated cardboard is designed in such a way that it gives a premium look to a simple packaging. Supports the brand well and it is very sturdy so it can be used several times.
Building on the great successes of recent years, our design teams from Finland, Sweden and Denmark have once again qualified themselves to participate in the international WorldStar packaging design competition, arranged by the World Packagin Organisation (WPO). We are wishing all participants best of luck!
