DS Smith innovative design wins Packaging Oscars in two categories
DS Smith wins The WorldStar Global Packaging Awards for excellence in product packaging design and innovation, of e-bike and industrial luminaries in e-commerce and transit packaging categories. The solutions have been designed and developed to reduce supply chain costs and offer security of online orders while providing an amazing customer experience.We are thrilled to see them being recognized for their effectiveness. by the most prestigious global industrial awards
World Packaging Organisation has been organizing WorldStar Awards since 1970 and giving awards to best packaging solutions and innovations from all over the world. This year DS Smith’s innovations have been recognized with four awards in three categories, among which two packaging were developed locally by DS Smith Hungary designers. The design for e-bike and industrial luminaries won in e-commerce and transit categories.
Market players had to face many challenges in recent times, such as cost reduction, radical decrease of empty places in trucks, product protection, customer experience and complex supply chain requirements need to be considered. The category winners had to meet these criteria among others.
The e-bike packaging is designed to elevate the unboxing experience by being easy open with the handy design, clear instructions, and pictograms. The bike can be easily rolled out by opening the front side of the box and can closed for return. The product weight was also an important factor during the design phase, depending on the model, a min 18,2 kg had to calculate with. Online orders often go through up to 50 touchpoints in a typical e-com journey and require high-durability packaging. To solve it side doors of the boxes were planned to be strong resistible to changing load, the position of the product is secured by corrugated triangles, and accessories are additional in small boxes. Regarding sustainability as a priority, 100% recyclable packaging was designed.
DS Smith distinguished with its packaging solution designed for industrial luminaires that optimize logistic operation. By creatively transforming traditional inline packaging, a new construction was created that fits to the product and supply chain. No special equipment was needed for production and no additional costs incurred.
The height of the packaging and the size of the pallets have been significantly reduced thanks to the special shape of the box. Resulting 33% more products can be delivered per pallet and 57% more volume by truck.
