Drones will make logistics a safer sector

Up to 430 different uses have been detected for drones, according to a recent report by UVS International, a Paris-based association that brings together companies involved in remote piloting

At the head come uses such as video recordings, precision agriculture, the viewing of catastrophic or dangerous areas, espionage ... and so on up to 430. However, one of the uses perhaps less glamorous, but of greater significance is the logistics and its incorporation into the discipline of Industry 4.0.

Multinational e-commerce companies such as Amazon see in the drones a tool to make their products arrive in an easier way.

But it is in logistics centres that drones can play a key role. In product storage centers, drones equipped with machine vision and learning systems can improve their own operations and improve their performance. And machine vision systems will allow you to review your environment to prevent accidents.

The use of drones in logistics centres allows resources to be optimised and more reliable data to be obtained. If we think, for example, of the large camps of finished vehicles of a car manufacturer, the drones allow aerial surveillance that no other device provides. The same applies to the control of containers, pallets or any other type of packaging.

In work at heights, and vertical, drones provide quality in operations and occupational safety, as it prevents employees who have to climb on forklifts.

According to the report of the consulting firm IDC on the drones market and collected by the journalist Alberto Iglesias in the TICBeat portal, the work done by the drones is done between 4 and 7 times faster. As we have already said, they can avoid work-related accidents at height, and thanks to the software they integrate, they provide more control and the possibility of data storage.

For companies such as DS Smith Tecnicarton, the use of drones by their customers means an improvement in the quality of the supply chain as it allows greater control of industrial packaging. If up to now, we have provided our packaging with RFID cards that allow us to know where a package is and avoid losses -especially with returnable packaging-, the incorporation of drones in logistics centers will improve control in the movement of loads.
