DS Smith supports cardboard recycling initiative for Recycle Week

DS Smith has worked with the Confederation of Paper Industries and other members of the association to launch ‘All Aboard Cardboard’ , an initiative aimed at encouraging the next generation of consumers to learn more about sustainable materials and their environmentally friendly qualities.

Head‘All Aboard Cardboard’ coincides with Recycle Week (16th – 22nd October), an annual event where brands, trade associations, governments and the media join forces to galvanise the public into recycling more often and more responsibly. DS Smith representatives have been working with their local primary schools across the UK to lead an educational programme that encourages our next generation to embrace the reusable, renewable, and recyclable credentials of the UK’s most sustainable packaging: cardboard.

The programme includes interactive presentations, a series of games, quizzes, and activities designed to educate and entertain children between the ages of five and eight  so they can make conscious choices and inspire family members with what they’ve learnt. Ian Boswell, Account Manager based at DS Smith, is one of the DS Smith representatives who has volunteered to help support this initiative within his local community.

Ian shared his expertise on the reusable and recyclable properties of cardboard as part of the children's assembly.

On his visit to Crossacres Primary Academy based in Manchester, Ian presented to an assembly of 90 children followed by leading activities in partnership with the teachers within three break-out classes. Timed ahead of Halloween, he also came armed with fully recyclable and reusable ‘Trick or Treat Boxes’ which each of the children assembled and coloured in.

It was a fantastic opportunity to get out of the normal working environment and talk about such an important topic to some of the next generation. I was impressed with how engaged and curious the children were.

The school commented that “Our pupils really enjoyed their recycling workshop with Ian.  They were amazed by how companies can make sustainable packaging choices and switch to cardboard to help the planet for future generations!"

The children were engaged and motivated after working with Ian to write their letters to send to our local councillor to raise awareness and ask for changes to be made. Thank you to DS Smith for helping us celebrate Recycling Week!

Here at DS Smith, we believe that the future of our planet is our responsibility, a part of this is educating our next generation on how to look after their local environment and make smart choices. This is represented in one of our Now and Next Sustainability Strategies, that by 2030, DS Smith aim to have engaged ten million people in our communities on the circular economy and circular lifestyles.
