DS Smith visits schools in Blackburn for the 'All Aboard Cardboard' recycling initiative

As the year draws to a close and we all become merry, let’s reflect on another great initiative that DS Smith took part in at the start of the month.

At the beginning of December, DS Smith representative Clair Wilkinson visited St Marys and St Josephs RC Primary School in Blackburn to support the “All Aboard Cardboard” Recycling initiative conducted by the Confederation of Paper Industries. The initiative seeks to involve the next generation of consumers to investigate sustainable materials and environmentally friendly alternatives.

The whole school of over 200 children from all year groups were involved in a day long team challenge themed around Recycling and its benefits. It began with an interactive assembly led by Clair that introduced corrugate and recycling to the school children, and allowed them to be inquisitive about its properties.

DS Smith provided Corrugate Christmas trees and dye cut gift boxes to support their activities. The younger year groups decorated their trees and made decorations out of recycling, whilst the older year groups conducted a Christmas packaging design challenge. The challenge involved utilising dye cut gift boxes, creating a product, designing a advert for their product and a jingle to go with the advert.

At the end of the day each year group came back together in the assembly hall and talked through their creations to Clair. It was great to see the breadth of creativity to be found in our next generation, and we are all really looking forward to the next DS Smith visit to our local communities.

Being part of the project allowed us as a whole school to come together to discuss why we need to recycle – as well as finding out lots of new facts. The children had an amazing day completing their challenges

The Christmas trees will be repurposed by the school in January next year; to support their woodland as part of their Nature Week.
