Making Fibre Fashionable – one delivery at a time

Our latest research uncovers the scale of plastic used in e-commerce clothing packaging, and sheds light on the positive impact that switching to fibre-based alternatives could have on the fashion industry, its consumers, and the planet.

Online fashion retailers delivered 941 million unnecessary plastic bags to UK shoppers last year alone – equating to 1,790 bags every minute.

As shoppers migrate online, the number of plastic bags used in online fashion retail is growing. With the number of bags set to rise by 40% between now and 2030, nearly 7 billion plastic bags will be arriving on UK doorsteps over the next five years.

Our latest research shows that currently, only 9% of fashion ecommerce bags delivered across the UK are being reused or recycled, while the remaining 91% end up in landfill or incineration – amounting to 875 million UK bags last year alone.

By 2030, over a billion plastic bags will end up in landfill or burned every year in the UK. As the online clothing market soars, switching to easily-recyclable, fibre-based alternatives has never been more important.

How can we help you?

With over half of European shoppers more likely to order from an online retailer that uses easily recyclable packaging, rather than plastic, the opportunity to meet consumer demand for more sustainable fashion packaging is evidently significant – both for the planet and your business.

We can help you solve your challenges and find solutions for ‘single-use’ and ‘hard-to-recycle’ packaging. Our ground-breaking Circular Design Metrics make it easy to compare the sustainability performance of different packaging designs across eight key indicators.

We have already created over 1,000 designs for millions of products geared towards reducing the use of problem plastics and we are 100% dedicated to helping find an innovation solution that is right for you.

“Switching from plastic to paper shipping bags has been a game-changer. After introducing our first paper bags, customer satisfaction with our new packaging surged by 16ppt year over year. The high acceptance rate makes us confident that we are on the right track with paper bags that are easy to recycle in the vast majority of Europe.” David Fischer, Director Logistics Sustainability and Packaging at Zalando

Brands like Zalando have proved change is possible, but our industry needs to step up to provide fibre-based alternatives. Sticking with plastic comes at a cost – consumers don’t want it, and brands risk their reputation by ignoring that.
