Avonmouth teaches local pupils about recycling and sustainability
On 14 January 2019, DS Smith Recycling Avonmouth visited Becket Primary School in Worle to deliver a lesson on sustainability to local pupils.
DS Smith is Europe’s largest recycler of paper and cardboard, and also has a commitment to be a Responsible Neighbour, ensuring that our sites give back to the communities they’re in. As part of this commitment, we encourage the education of local students in the importance of recycling and sustainability across a number of our locations.
Becket Primary School’s students have been studying recycling, as well as the challenges around plastic, as part of the school’s commitments to facilitating learning through projects that have an impact beyond the classroom, and which link the school with the local community.
Rob Collard, Headteacher at Becket Primary School, said:
As part of our curriculum, we particularly enjoy working with local companies and experts so that our children get a unique learning experience. DS Smith was able to share its expertise and passion for recycling, provide guidance on turning this into habits around our local community, and share ideas about future careers. Recycling is a highly important issue that will continue to affect our children’s lives, therefore it is essential that, along with DS Smith, we reinforce the messages of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
Gideon Clegg, Business Manager at DS Smith Recycling Avonmouth, said:
Our employees really enjoy working with the local community to share their experiences and help to make a difference in our rapidly changing world. It is so important that the next generation understand more about issues such as recycling, so that we can continue to build a more sustainable future for everyone.
The pupils will now participate in the DS Smith Poster Challenge, submitting designs that encourage people to be sustainable, such as by recycling more, or using less water.
Becket Primary School is holding a Public Gallery Exhibition to display the everything the pupils have learned about recycling and sustainability, including their posters, on Wednesday 3rd April.
