DS Smith wins a second award for its Reject Processing Centre in Kemsley

DS Smith has won Edie Sustainability Leaders Award for Waste and Resource Management for its Reject Processing Centre (RPC) at Kemsley Mill.

Edie-awards.jpgThe reject processing centre was established at Kemsley Mill in order to deal with the amounts of waste that were generated as a result of processing and producing paper and cardboard. The reject processing centre uses machinery and equipment with the purpose of separating wire, plastic and fibre that are generated during the production of paper and cardboard and put these materials to more beneficial use.

Once the materials are separated, the metal wire is sent for recycling, turning the cost of disposing of the unusable wire into a new source of income. The plastics that have little value in this condition are mixed with sludge from the mill effluent process and sent to the on-site EON Waste to Energy plant to produce process steam. Fibre recovered is fed back into the paper mill. Overall this process is turning waste into valuable resource.

The Sustainability Leaders award is the second award that has been won by DS Smith for the reject processing centre at the Kemsley Mill. It demonstrates that we are delivering on our aims and it is great to see that industry representatives are recognising DS Smith for this too.

The award was presented at the Edie Awards on 19th November at a ceremony in the Grand Connaught Rooms in London. DS Smith was up against finalists GENeco, RB, Sainsbury's, Simply Cups and Travis Perkins & Crest Nicholson in this category.

Graham Appleby, Site Facilities Manager, commented:
"This is a great achievement. This project fits with DS Smith's sustainability strategy and circular economy as well as realises the potential of partnerships between Company and Supplier.
