A new packaging solution for maritime transport
GALIA (Group for Improving Links to the Automotive Industry) has requested the participation of industrial packaging expert DS Smith in the development of the new GALIA EMB 12 range.
The GALIA EMB 12 is a range of single-use corrugated cardboard packaging units that enables the shipping of automobile parts from manufacturing plants to various assembly plants across the world. The range includes cardboard crates and matching lids, as well as regrouping lids and wooden pallets.
A product range adapted to suit the expectations of automotive industry stakeholders
-
Respecting ergonomic constraints
The crates are easy to assemble and disassemble; the on-site supply of components has been simplified.
-
Reducing logistics costs
The refilling of various maritime shipping containers is highly optimised. The range makes it possible to avoid over-filling cardboard packaging units, e.g. GALIA EMB 1 or KLT crates. There is potential for the use of templates and automation in connection with large volumes.
- Protecting the products during transport, maintenance and inventory in tropical climates
The VCR (Vertical Compression Resistance) test results for the GALIA EMB 12 range vary between 540 and 935 daN depending on the type.
-
Facilitating palletisation
The exterior dimensions of the crates are submultiples of the dimensions of “export” pallets. Different crate types can be palletised on the same pallet.
-
Making it easy to recycle the packaging
In cases where glue and staples are not used, GALIA EMB 12 packaging can be flattened and recycled with ease.
This new range represents an automotive industry standard which can be produced across the world in order to simplify Supply Chain flows and encourage on-site filling of automotive parts destined for ‘External Assembly Plants’. It complies with GALIA’s standards, combating the presence of counterfeit products among equipment suppliers and constructors and the risks associated therewith.
DS Smith France will monitor the introduction of the EMB 12 range at equipment supplier sites, supplying production samples on request and organising the supply points. Beyond this, the Packaging Division of DS Smith, which has a presence in 26 European countries, will be utilising its internal production and distribution network to develop the range on a pan-European level.
A communication plan relating to the GALIA EMB 12 range will shortly be distributed to automotive industry stakeholders.
