DS Smith wins Scanstar
DS Smith in Sweden won a ScanStar for its “well-designed and well thought-out” solution for Tork Carry Box.
As usual there were lots of long discussions in the jury about the submissions to the ScanStar competition. The jury gathered outside Stockholm in the middle of September to go through all 28 submissions received. Several companies had multiple submissions to the competition.
DS Smith in Sweden was awarded a Scanstar for the Tork Carry Box packaging created by our designers at our PackRightCentre.
Tork Carry Box received a ScanStar for its well designed and well thought-out solution that takes into consideration the ergonomics of modern users. The folding of the box with a new grip in the bottom was especially interesting. Easy to open, easy to carry, and easy to recycle.
Even this year there was a certain preponderance of fibre-based contributions in the competition, but what else can you expect in a Nordic competition? There were both new innovations and variants of older models in the flock. The jury was confronted with everything from innovative cardboard packaging and new bags of polymer materials, to different types of beakers. Obviously it’s not possible to match these packagings with each other, because they are so different. Each packaging has to be judged on its own merits.
“We had both industrial and consumer packaging for food, displays and transport, as well as logistics to judge, and it was a very interesting breadth,” confirms Anders Engström from the trade association Packforsk, who was the chairman of this year’s competition.
“Perhaps the two most exciting things this year were the transport pack that with very small adjustments had an extra protective function for food, and the resealable e-commerce pack, but it’s up to everyone to judge what they think is best among the winners.”
The jury this year consisted, apart from Anders Engström, also of Allan Dickner from IKEA, Ole-Kristian Vestbekken from Mills in Norway Lasse Lavrsen from Toms Gruppen in Daemark, Bo Wallteg from the magazine Nord Emballage in Sweden, and Marie Hiltunen from Stora Enso in Finland. The so-called SPA observer was Kari Bunes from Emballasjeforeningen in Norway. SPA is the federation of packaging associations in the Nordic countries.
It should be noted that one of the contributions in the competition was submitted by Stora Enso, and that Marie Hiltunen did not take part during the judging of this contribution.
The jury was fairly severe in its judgment this year. Nine of the submitted contributions received a ScanStar and were therefore given the opportunity to also take part in World Star.
This year’s distribution of prizes will take place on the big stage at Scanpack in Göteborg on 20 October 2015 at 16.00.
