Two German Packaging Awards for DS Smith
DS Smith has won not one, but two prizes at the 2011 German Packaging Awards.
In the “Prototypes” category, DS Smith, together with the Fraunhofer Institut for Process Engineering and Packaging, was awarded the coveted prize for its “fruit fresh+” packaging concept. This concept describes a specially produced ethylene-absorbent corrugated cardboard. Ethylene gas is produced by the natural ripening process of fruit and vegetables and is absorbed by the specially treated corrugated cardboard. The additional coating allows fruit and vegetables to be stored for longer, as it reduces dispersal of the gas. This results in obvious advantages for transporting groceries and commercial storage, by extending the shelf life of fruit and reducing spoilage (decay). This should also be good news for consumers: Thanks to improved storage conditions, fruit and vegetables can be picked later, which should give products a more intense flavour and allow them to retain more valuable ingredients. “Fruit fresh +” is an innovative, forward-looking technique, which can open up new markets for the packaging sector,” says Carolyn Wagner, Sales & Marketing Director of DS Smith. In the “Display and Promotional Packaging” category, DS Smith won over the jury with its Outside-In-Display. A pallet display was created for the wrapping paper manufacturer Zöwie, with the focus on efficient and cost-effective production. The ingenious twist: The display is made from a single die-cut section and therefore comes in one piece. The back panel, in this example of a single-colour printed display, is taken out of the die-cut section and folded back inwards with its outside. This means that there is no need for additional print on the inside.
The German Packaging Awards have been recognising particularly innovative packaging solutions since 1963 under the aegis of the Federal Department of Economics and Technology. The jury includes experts from Nestlé Deutschland AG, Beiersdorf AG, Tchibo GmbH, EDEKA Aktiengesellschaft, FH Hannover and Stuttgart Media University. Together, they choose the 21 winners in a total of seven categories: Sales Packaging, Transport Packaging, Display and Promotional Packaging, Design, Features and Finishing, Prototypes, Machine Technology and the Young Talent category.
Around 250 entries were submitted for the 34th edition of the German Packaging Awards, the motto for which, this year, is “Alternative Concepts. Intelligent Solutions. Innovative Development”. 54 concepts were nominated, but only 21 packaging solutions were awarded the coveted prize, which is one of the most prestigious in the packaging sector. The “Packaging Sector Oscars” were handed out during an evening of celebrations at the Brau Beviale Trade Fair in Nuremberg. In addition to novelty/innovation and functionality, ecological, economic and aesthetic aspects played a key role in choosing the winners.
The packaging prizes, awarded by the German Packaging Institute, entitle DS Smith to take part in WorldStar. This competition, which is organised by the World Packaging Organisation, only accepts entries who have already won a national competition.
